Last week "Frau Professor" Wallmann's 127th production, a three-act spectacular, Clitennestra, by Italian Composer Ildebrando Pizzetti, had its world premiere at Milan's La Scala. Musically, the work was something of a dud-somber, repetitive, unnecessarily difficult to sing. But as exciting theater, the bloodthirsty Agamemnon legend is hard to beat, and Wallmann did not try: instead she moved her chorus in a plastic combination of Greek tragedy and modern ballet, guided Star Soprano Clara Petrella in a performance of icy majesty, and won unanimous critical acclaim for what Milan's Corriere d'Informazione...
Smack at 165 m.p.h. On the 127th lap, the two cars snarled full bore around the west turn, with Panch "drafting" Lorenzen, tucked into his slipstream only inches behind. "I had just about 6 ft. between me and the wall," Lorenzen said later. "All of a sudden, we ran into hard rain; Panch started around me on the outside, and we really connected. My right front fender smacked the wall. Then my right rear smacked the wall and straightened me out. Good thing too. I was doing about 165 m.p.h...
...Convention Hall. Carter's looks (shaved head, drooping Fu Manchu moustache) and ring credentials (a one-round knockout of Welterweight King Emile Griffith) were impressive enough to make him the betting favorite at 11-10. But they hardly awed Champion Giardello, 34, who was fighting his 127th professional bout. Counterpunching craftily, scoring heavily with short, chopping hooks, Giardello won a lopsided victory, to the delight of 6,000 home-town fans...
...only low point in the score is a tasteless lament for Harlem: "Don't Forget 127th Street," contains lyrics like "there's no slum like your own . . . the neighborhood is classy--we've got rats as big as Lassie . . . H is for the heroin they sell here. A is for the alleys where we play . . ."The audience loved it. There was even a loud round of applause just after a mention of the white man's wild ideas about the Negro's dancing ability. This, of course, was followed by an amazing display of dancing from the chorus. Such...
That kind of mistake sometimes produces a classic mating of man to institution. Shortly after he presides at Union's 127th annual Commencement this week, Van Dusen will retire, after 37 years as instructor, professor and (since 1945) president of the nation's leading nondenominational seminary. Earnest, vigorous "Pit" Van Dusen, 65, will live with his wife Betty in a home they bought last year in Princeton, but is not likely to settle merely for the "three Rs" he once proposed as ideal for his state of life: rustication, reading and reflection. As a farewell gesture of respect...
