When word of TIME'S cover story circulated among Washington arms dealers, Hannifin found himself invited to West Virginia by a munitions merchant to try his hand at firing M-16s and Uzis. "I didn't shoot badly," he reports, "perhaps because I remembered what my old rifle-team instructor at Boise, Idaho, high school taught me. Barring any unforeseen problems, the Air Force's initial $418 million order for 15 preproduction YF-16s will grow into a $4.3 billion purchase of 650 planes at first, and perhaps another 400 planes later on. Although the Navy is looking closely at the Northrop jet, it too may decide to purchase a carrier version of the YF-16. Meanwhile, a consortium of four NATO allies-Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway and Denmark-is approaching a decision on whether to buy 350 of the planes. They were stripped to the waist, dangling their M-16s with that insouciance which seems universally to characterize men in jungle combat. With the chopper unloaded and the formalities exchanged, we took off again. The whole visit, one small episode in the campaign, had lasted less than three minutes...

...Thieu posters, and hurled Molotov cocktails at the police. At one point, more than a thousand students on the old city side of the Perfume River struggled to link up with 200 others on the Hue University side. Combat police used tear gas and repeated bursts from their M-16s to break up the demonstration...
