...over its waiting room. And it was a mere 20 years ago, give or take, that St. Louis razed 40 quaint blocks of riverfront warehouses; that Pasadena, Calif., tore up a fine commercial neighborhood to build a standard aluminum shopping mall; that Madison, Wis., let Burger King raze an 1850s stone house for its headquarters; that New York City tore down McKim, Mead and White's glorious Pennsylvania Station...
...American affair with machine culture during those years -- functionalism, steel-and-glass buildings and so forth -- had been imported, as intellectual fashion, from Europe. Nothing could be further from the truth. The concise and mighty industrial-based forms of American building, conceived by architects from James Bogardus in the 1850s to Louis Sullivan in the 1890s and by the engineers of a technology whose emblematic climax was John and Washington Roebling's Brooklyn Bridge, were among the prototypes of European avant-garde thinking before and after World War I. ...called pompier art of the Third Empire. (Pompier means "fireman," and the allusion is to the heroic nudes with Greek helmets, resembling the casques of the Paris fire brigade, that infested beaux arts academic painting.) Cachin and her colleagues have dredged up an astounding panoply of period kitsch, from 1850s imitators of Ingres through Bouguereau to what must be the most obsessively pederastic elocution in all art history, Jean Delville's School of Plato, featuring Alcibiades and his willowy friends yearning like blessed damsels at the lucky philosopher in a landscape full of wisteria and white peacocks. Woven through these...

Fairchild C-123K cargo plane over Nicaragua three weeks ago. The prosecution would attempt to try the U.S. Government itself for "Yanqui interventions" dating from the 1850s. Complained former U.S. Attorney General Griffin Bell, a member of Hasenfus' defense team: "He is an absolute pawn...
During the 1850s, a Congregational cleric named Horace Bushnell said that the distinction of sex puts men and women "in different classes of being. One is the force principle. The other is the beauty principle." Men had muscles. Women were soft, or at least they were very differently muscled. Bushnell's distinction survives, more or less, in a new movie called Perfect. The actress Jamie Lee Curtis plays a sleekly made aerobics instructor described by the movie's title. It is in another movie, Pumping Iron II: The Women, that Bushnell is definitively put in his place. In this semidocumentary...
