...takes a cool head to distinguish between campus reformers, who hope to salvage the university, and campus revolutionaries, who hope to savage it. When extremists halt classes, they kill the spirit of a university in somewhat the same way that the Nazis did in the 1930s. Seizing buildings is only slightly less dangerous. A recent Harris poll showed that 89% of Americans wanted police to quell campus rebels, whatever the radicalizing effect on moderate students. Voters are pushing state legislators for repressive laws. California has more than 100 such bills before its senate and assembly: One provides five-year sentences...
Died. Max Eastman, 86, lusty lion of the left until the late 1930s when he became disenchanted and turned his literary talents to exposing Communism; of a stroke; in Bridgetown, Barbados. Tall, handsome and charming, Eastman captivated women (three marriages, numerous self-publicized affairs), yet nothing equaled his youthful love match with radicalism. In World War I, as editor of The Masses, he preached so violently against U.S. involvement that he was indicted (but not convicted) for sedition. In the 1920s, he traveled to Russia, where he became an intimate of Trotsky, but disillusionment came with Stalin's terrorism...
Rebellion in Sinlciang. The degree of Russian control over the borderlands varied through the following decades. During the 1930s, the Soviet Union's in fluence grew steadily in the far-west Chinese province of Sinkiang, at a time when China's Nationalist government was distracted by the invading Japanese in the east. A few years later, while the Russians were concentrating on the war against Germany, the Chinese re-established themselves in Sinkiang, only to be confronted with rebellions that had at least tacit Soviet support. Even after Mao Tse-tung and the Chinese Communists came to power...
...both prosperity and a continual fear of pogroms. At 19, he landed at Jaffa in the aliya, or immigrant wave, of 1914, and hiked across the sandhills to a farming village. As the need arose, he became in turn a farmer, soldier, irrigation expert and labor organizer. In the 1930s, he was sent to Germany to help Jews emigrate to Palestine. In the '40s, he was a member of the high command of the Haganah, responsible for buying and manufacturing arms...
...avant-garde is overblown, and so are the claims that this book is a germinal literary event. Celine said that he wrote the way people talk and evidently regarded this as a startling innovation. It may be considered a departure only by comparison with the preposterous presumption of the 1930s, when French novelists assumed that all Parisians thought like Voltaire and talked like Racine. In England and elsewhere, low speech in fiction has been a commonplace convention for decades. Only a Frenchman would regard it as a Gallic invention...
