Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, psychoanalytic chic ran high, generating optimism about its potential that far outran Freud's. The master, of course, thought he had made a decisive breakthrough, but one destined to be modified by other discoveries, some of them biological and chemical. Psychoanalysis, he said, could do little for the seriously ill, such as schizophrenics and other psychotics, and even many neurotics should expect little more than transforming "hysterical misery into common unhappiness." Even that might not be achieved if the patient was too old and set in his ways...
...promoter of her small but genuine talents. Ironically, her death two years ago at age 73 preceded by only a few months the general fame she had courted so long. The source of this attention was a cache of erotic stories she had written, for cash, in the early 1940s; her patron was an anonymous collector who told her to "leave out the poetry and descriptions of anything but sex" and paid her a dollar a page. Published posthumously under the title Delta of Venus, these stories climbed the bestseller charts in mid-1977 and settled there for more than...
Sadly, as the editors of the 1940s, '50s and '60s point out, the literary gadflies have lost much of their sting. The underground has become fashionable: everybody has joined the avant-garde and Allen Ginsberg has joined academe. Lacking the diehard convictions of their elders, most of the 1,500 little magazines now being published print anything and wind up sounding the same. "The multiplication of poets sort of leaves my mind blank," says Poet Karl Shapiro, former editor of Poetry. In many ways this collection of essays is a retrospective; editors like Robie Macauley, formerly...
...point of his career was in the 1940s. He decided, in a mood of perversity, to paint "modern art" -pictures full of impressionist fuzz and expressionist slather. The Gorgon, 1943, a wretched parody of Monet applied to a surrealist syntax, may be the least inept of these. If anything, they showed how far Magritte's real gifts lay from the orthodox processes of modernism. Nor did his first essays in the surrealist manner, done in 1925-26, indicate much about the artist to come; they are, for the most part, grab bags of motifs from other painters, chiefly Ernst...
Memphis, Greensboro, N.C., Balti more. When the bus finally pulls into New York City we are close to three days late. But no one is eager to say goodbye. It does not seem to matter that the whole experience seems as corny as a 1940s movie. Roughing it, sharing everything from spare cash to toothbrushes, has formed bonds unheard of on Amtrak. Jerry, Ted and Susie stay aboard, heading for the last stop in Boston. As the bus pulls out, the traveler, walking away in the snow, hands jammed into pockets against the cold, finds that someone has slipped...
