...been nine months since Clinton played federal marshal in the Great Yellowstone Mine Shootout. The dispute began in the late 1980s as new techniques for locating pay dirt suddenly turned old claims on Henderson into a $1 billion lode of extractable ore. The glitch was that the peak is a scant 2.5 miles upstream from Yellowstone National Park. Environmental groups, warning that a megamine would poison the park's ecosystem, threatened massive lawsuits against Crown Butte, the company planning a round-the-clock extraction effort. Then the Administration stepped in, and after months of secret talks, Crown Butte agreed...
...players all had their historic smiles on. In Washington they know how to produce those expressions even when they sign bills declaring National Sawdust Week. But this time that look of thoughtful satisfaction was right for the occasion. Out-of-control deficits, like the ones heaped up in the 1980s, are historic disasters. Bringing them under control requires a rare convergence of wisdom, determination and good fortune. So when those things came together last week, everybody made a grab for the glory. Launched in 1988, the now defunct Sassy magazine racked up awards and hundreds of thousands of subscribers as the first teen magazine to pay homage to girls uninterested in bubble-gum pop and the notion that true love flows only to those...
Bill Clinton may waft on about building bridges to the 21st century, but it was Ronald Reagan who really talked the millennial talk, what with his loose chat about Evil Empires and Armageddon. Surely, the 1980s would have made a better closing decade than the relatively placid late '90s--just about any decade of this cataclysmic century would have. And maybe that's why the millennium already feels like a dud. Compared with where we've been these past hundred years, the new age seems to promise normality more than doom or utopia. Which isn't a bad thing...
