...collateral damage from the Iraq war - and the two men's bitter rivalry - persuaded Blair to stand aside. Labour's third term in office, secured in 2005, has been "blighted," says Neil Stewart, who was Political Secretary to Neil Kinnock, Labour's leader during its wilderness years in the 1980s and early 1990s. "This third term should have been the most reforming. It's been first waiting for Tony to go and then waiting for Gordon to make his mind up. I can hardly believe the damage of that internecine battle, just how utterly destructive and wasteful of huge amounts...

...camo craze swept the country in the 1980s, with teenagers and hunters alike sporting all sorts of apparel in signature splotches of green, tan and brown. Retail experts credited America's military campaigns in Lebanon and Grenada for the trend. As a manufacturer told TIME in 1984, "I think many people wear military clothes because they feel proud of the U.S." To this day, consumers can find the familiar Woodland motif in oddly conspicuous colors - neon orange, bright red, hot pink - on everything from lingerie to toilet paper. Diplomats, academics and intelligence officials say most people inside Iran want nothing to do with the NCRI or its primary member organization, Mujehadine-e-Khalq (MEK) - whose bloody attacks on the Iranian regime in the 1980s and '90s landed it on the U.S.'s terrorism list. Experts say the NCRI's support in Iran is now tiny and its international base is shrinking. The NCRI and MEK, say Iran watchers, have become little more than an excuse - or handy alibi - for Tehran's crackdown. (See pictures...

In the late 1980s, the British researchers published the earliest studies describing what has become known as the Maudsley method of treating anorexia in teens - and it remains the only therapy that has proved effective in controlled trials. Unlike traditional treatment, which assumes that anorexia is caused by environmental factors and low self-esteem and often involves intense therapy at residential treatment centers, the outpatient Maudsley method does not focus on psychological therapies or on "parent-ectomy" - removing the teen from the home...

...Virginia killer dubbed the "South Side Strangler" was sentenced to death after DNA linked him to several rapes and murders around Richmond. DNA is also responsible for snaring Gary Ridgway, the infamous "Green River Killer" of Washington State, responsible for a string of murders around Seattle in the 1980s and '90s. After being implicated by genetic testing, Ridgway pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 48 consecutive life sentences. Law-enforcement agencies around the world are assembling DNA databases, which have yielded matches that investigators may otherwise have missed. The FBI now has DNA records on more than 5 million convicted...
