...loved Hugh Sidey's tribute to the Marine Corps Band on its 200th birthday [AMERICAN SCENE, July 20]. Oh, how I wish that the start of sports events would feature a recording of the national anthem by this band, or the Army or Navy band--with no vocalist! Let the people sing along if they wish. A really top-notch performance inspires allegiance as nothing else can. But the way many singers and musicians today render the national anthem is an abomination.
