...York Herald Tribune's Editorial Writer Walter Millis, author of the Isolationists' Bible, Road to War, wrote in his Yale 20th reunion book: "I would like to see the Nazis get the pants licked off them and the Stalinists sent back to the Kremlin... I hope the U. S. won't have to get into the war, but am not prepared to say that under certain circumstances American military participation would not be necessary and worth it." ∧ In the House, Ism-eater Martin Dies was lustily applauded for the first time in months when he launched...

...screen, with an eye in the middle, can with a sneeze inspire both terror and laughter. J. Mortimer Foulfellow, who is a hair-brushed and Oxford-accented Big Bad Fox, is not only a contemptible villain, but a social satire of no mean acidity. It may be a 20th-century, streamlined job--this "Pinocchio"--but the old familiar tale is robbed of none of its genial moralizing and pathetic humor...

With eleven top-flight portraits by Rembrandt and Frans Hals as its central attraction, the exhibition (valued at some $2,000,000) covered 500 years of finely-turned painting, from the squirming, mystical fantasies of 15th-Century Hieronymus Bosch to the geometric designs of 20th-century Piet Mondrian. What made Grand Rapids Dutch almost as proud: the name of practically every artist in the show could also be found in the Grand Rapids telephone directory...

Star Dust(20th Century-Fox) is a light-hearted apologia to scores of young hopefuls whom Hollywood calls west for screen tests each year only to send most of them home again. But Hollywood gets so interested in itself it forgets to apologize. More exciting to most cinemaddicts than the plot about the waitress (Linda Darnell) and the chump football hero (John Payne) who click before the cameras will be the game of identifying the Hollywood counterparts of the wicked casting director (Donald Meek), the actor who has superannuated into a talent scout (Roland Young). In the headstrong, somewhat brassy...

Most people think of the Moby Dick era as the heyday of whaling, but whaling did not actually reach slaughterhouse efficiency with floating factories and motor launch harpoon-gunning until the 20th Century. In the three centuries from 1620 to 1920 the average whale catch was about 3,000 a year. In the 1937-38 season 54,664 whales (yielding 615,500 tons of oil) were taken, the greatest number in history. Writing in Science recently, Dr. Murphy observed that during the 1938-39 season a record kill may again have been perpetrated, but there were so many ships...
