...journalism while wearing a gold chain. But lately I've been looking at that chain differently. With gold climbing from $275 an ounce in 2000 to an all-time high of more than $1,000 earlier this year, late-night commercials for companies like Cash4Gold--the 271st fastest-growing company in the country according to Inc. magazine and the most embarrassingly named company according to this one--are asking me to mail in my gold for cash. My chain, in these hard times, might buy me my last prix fixe meal...

Joseph Vincent Paterno, 68, is now two games into his 30th season as the head coach of the Penn State football team. Last Saturday the Nittany Lions demolished Temple 66-14 to stretch their winning streak to 19 games, the longest in the nation. That also gave Paterno his 271st victory as a head coach, which is fourth on the all-time major college list, behind Bear Bryant (323), Pop Warner (319) and Amos Alonzo Stagg (314). After 1½ hours, the 271st broke off the attack and retreated through the heavy jungle, carrying its wounded and most probably many of its dead. It left behind 103 V.C. corpses. U.S. losses were the heaviest taken in a single engagement since early summer: 55 killed, 66 wounded. But elsewhere the ground action was relatively light. Though the Allies sent a total of 56 battalion-size sweeps searching for enemy throughout South Viet Nam, the only other place where the Communists fought rather than ran was in the northern I Corps area. Near Quang Tri City, 80 miles north...
