...country's 600,000-man army is well trained and well equipped, and Chiang keeps 80,000 troops poised and battle-ready on Taiwan's sister islands of Quemoy and Matsu, which are still bombarded now and then by Communist shore batteries. His high-flying U-2s regularly overfly the mainland taking pictures of Red China's defenses. Nationalist agents still cross the Strait of Taiwan to infiltrate the mainland. Chiang's government claims that 40 anti-Communist incidents occurred on the mainland between March and October 1966, most of them involving highway and railway bombings...
...corps of translators collects and analyzes an endless stream of Chinese periodicals, some smuggled out from remote provinces. The compulsive outpourings of Radio Peking and other internal radio stations are monitored by a string of sophisticated snooping devices on China's perimeter. Drone planes, high-flying U-2s and satellite cameras record roads, railways, steel mills, oil wells, nuclear plants, missile ranges and troop movements. U.S. Government analysts early spotted China's gaseous diffusion plant at Lanchow, the plutonium reactor at Paotow, and the atom-bomb test site at Lop Nor in the Taklamakan wastes of Sinkiang. They...
...agents on information-gathering missions and to explore the possibilities of a genuinely effective underground inside Cuba. When Castro boasts that he has captured and executed CIA men, he is often telling the truth. Other than that, the U.S. is content to watch Cuba with high-flying U-2s and an occasional supersonic treetop dash by Air Force RF-101 or Navy RA-5C reconnaissance jets. Should Castro shoot down one of the jets with his Soviet-supplied SAM II missiles, the U.S. contingency plan is to "take out" -meaning obliterate-the specific SAM site involved. The plan...
That's about the only surprise in the new novel by Pierre Boulle (Bridge Over the River Kwai). A shallow attempt at fictionalizing the space age, it traces a handful of Axis rocket engineers from Peenemünde, where they "romantically" built Hitler's V-2s, into the diaspora of the postwar world, where they end up glumly competing with one another in the U.S.-Soviet space race. There is Stern, a faint carbon copy of Wernher von Braun who talks like a cross between Tom Swift and Astroboy. There is Nadia, his luscious White Russian assistant...
Spotting the actual test site should not have been hard. Since the Russians stopped supplying them with the latest Soviet missiles and interceptors, the Chinese have been almost helpless against photographic flights by U-2s and other high-flying airplanes. Deep in the desert, the site in Sinkiang requires conspicuous roads, transport vehicles, housing, supply dumps. Its burst of activity before the test must have been plainly visible to U-2s and perhaps to reconnaissance satellites orbiting overhead. If such activity still continues in the hostile Takla Makan, the Chinese are likely as Secretary Rusk announced last week, to shoot...
