...After the smooth-talking Tariq Aziz threatened to shoot down U-2s Monday, Clinton opted for restraint by waiting to see if the U.N. Security Council would condemn Saddam. They did. Iraq responded with an angry expulsion of American inspectors that only brought the U.S. and U.N. closer together...

...been fussing over itemization, less solid citizens have been pillaging the IRS, having discovered that the agency can't catch them. The foundation of fraud detection is what professionals call "information matching"--reconciling all the information supplied by the taxpayer (including Social Security numbers) with the information on W-2s and 1099 (miscellaneous income) forms, not to mention investment income and bank transactions. ...Army and Navy, meanwhile, were reconstituting mechanisms from the Nazis' V-1 guided missiles, which had wrought such tremendous damage on England in the waning months of the European war. The result was the JB-2 jet bomb, a low-altitude missile. The Army had requisitioned 1,000 JB-2s by the end of July 1945 as part of an eventual plan to hit Japan with up to 500 such missiles a day. The Navy hoped to do the same with its version, called the Loon. But by that time, more horrific technologies were ready to close...
