...Sept. 28, 1918, Corporal Freddie Stowers led a squad from Company C of the all-black 371st Infantry Regiment against a German unit dug into a hill in France. After a brief fight, the Germans appeared to surrender but suddenly blasted Stowers' men with machine-gun fire and mortar rounds, killing nearly half of Company C. Mortally wounded, Stowers, a 21-year-old South Carolina farmer, urged his men on to victory until he died. His commanding officer recommended Stowers for the Medal of Honor, but for 73 years he received no medal...

In 1888 Ignatius Donnelly, a onetime Congressman from Minnesota, uncorked the following numbers game: on page 53 of the histories in the first Folio he found the word Bacon ("I have a gammon of Bacon"), which, counting downward, proved to be the 371st spoken word on the page ("I then divided that number, 371, by 53, the number of the page, and the quotient was seven!"). According to the Donnelly lucky-seven countdown, it turned out that Bacon wrote not only Shakespeare, but all of Marlowe, Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy and Montaigne...

Except for a few separate regiments (like the 369th 376th 371st and 372nd). their record was undistinguished.
