While gays have faced uneven results in the political arena, especially at the national level, they have made great strides in the seemingly less inviting world of private business. Hundreds of companies, including IBM, Eastman Kodak, Harley-Davidson, Dow Chemical, Du Pont, 3M and Time Warner, have specific policies banning discrimination based on sexual orientation. Many, ranging from the Wall Street law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy to the insurer Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, provide health or other benefits for gay employees' partners. Such old-line companies as Union Carbide and Colgate-Palmolive hire consultants to teach...

Many companies recognized long ago, without any nudge from governments, that respect for the environment can boost profits. In the U.S., 3M has drastically reduced pollution and waste at its manufacturing plants and, despite the conventional wisdom that says environmentalism is a luxury, has steadily increased its profits. Once industrialists think about it at all seriously, they almost inevitably see the financial advantages of investments in environmental technology, says Hugh Faulkner, executive director of the Business Council for Sustainable Development. The St. Paul-based company quickly sued, charging J&J with violating four of its patents. Last month a federal court backed 3M and ordered J&J to pay $116 million in damages and interest -- the fourth largest patent-infringement judgment in history...

American citizens in the Bonn area have been advised by the U.S. embassy to vary their daily routes. To protect their workers, three U.S. corporations -- Ford, Chrysler and 3M Co. -- last week banned or sharply restricted employee travel to nearly all destinations outside...

...Minneapolis 3M encourages employees to devote about 15% of their work schedule to non-job related tasks, or doing "skunkworks" duty, as it's known around the office. One skunkworking engineer came up with the idea for those neat adhesive Post-it notes while letting his imagination roam. This and other employee-generated brainstorms, from three-dimensional magnetic recording tape to disposable masks, have encouraged 3M to set a goal of 25% in total revenues from new products developed in the past five years. Currently those revenues are running closer to 30%, and 3M figures that nearly...
