Thai guards responsible for base security flashed the alarm. By that time, however, the intruders had already damaged two planes, an F-4D Phantom fighter bomber and a C-141 jet transport fitted for medical evacuation. Scheduling the Expedition's supply runs has also proven difficult. An old R-4D Dakota, operating out of Barrow, flew the first three airdrops and actually made two landings out on the ice, but beyond a certain point in the sled journey, the R-4D couldn't make the flight without a refueling stop at T-3, pretty much an impossibility now that the runway has melted...

Ever since conscription was adopted by the U.S. during the Civil War, ministers, priests and seminarians have been automatically exempt from military draft. Today, 101,500 men are classified as 4D- exempt as ordained clerics or seminarians. President Johnson's proposed new selective service law, while tightening up on other categories of exemptions, maintains the clerical exception. Nonetheless, the ministry's draft immunity has recently come under attack-chiefly by churchmen themselves...
