...Charlie Crist's May 12 announcement that he will run for Senate instead of reelection in 2010 was rare good news for the flailing GOP. The first-term governor, who is seeking the seat held by retiring Republican Sen. Mel Martinez, has consistently boasted approval ratings in the high 60s since taking office despite economic dark days in the Sunshine State. An adroit campaigner who addresses every citizen he meets as "my boss," Crist is widely expected to crush the general election field - if he can make it through the primary. Dubbed a RINO - Republican in Name Only...

...date, the only other major screening tool for Alzheimer's was developed by Finnish scientists in 2006. However, that screen is targeted toward a younger population and designed to identify the highest-risk individuals in midlife. But considering how many factors may intervene between midlife and the 60s - the decade in which Alzheimer's typically sets in - Deborah Barnes, a professor of psychiatry at UCSF, says she wanted to develop a screen for the older population more likely to be at immediate risk of the disease...

The smooth crooners of the previous decade quickly faded, "the witty lyric and the well-crafted love song seeming as antiquated as antimacassars or curling tongs." As an appraiser of public buildings he is no less a conservative than Prince Charles. Davies rails against the New Brutalism, a style that incarcerated generations...

The secular societies that formed in the 1950s and '60s in opposition to Israel - especially the Baathist regimes in Iraq and Syria, and Egypt under Nasser - were pretty good protectors of religious pluralism. About 5% or 6% of Iraq's population in the 1970s were Christian, and some of Saddam Hussein's most prominent officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz, were Christians. But since the American invasion of Iraq, Christians have fled in droves, and constitute less than...

...Kemp began a career in politics, describing himself as a "bleeding-heart conservative." As a GOP congressman from Buffalo, the blue-collar city whose AFL team he had led to two championships in the mid '60s, he worked with black colleagues on issues opposed by both many conservatives and Republicans, including sanctions on South Africa and a national holiday to commemorate the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King...
