...Tokyo on the planned one-hour run, the huge U.S.-built Boeing 747 smashed into a mountain in a wilderness area often called the Tibet of Japan's Gumma prefecture. The death toll made it the worst single-plane accident in aviation history. Only the collision of two other 747s, one taxiing and the second racing toward takeoff, at fog-shrouded Tenerife in the Canary Islands on March 27, 1977, killed more people...

In 1991 his company merged with ID Two, designer of the first laptop, to form Ideo. During the heady high-tech 1990s, the firm became the hottest product-design shop in Silicon Valley, working with the biggest names in business, churning out hundreds of supremely user-friendly designs like...

Along the approach to the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, 747s screamed overhead day and night. His flight instructor at Pan Am International Flight Academy found Moussaoui genial but clueless and totally unable to explain why he wanted to pilot a 747. The school's administration called the FBI, and he was arrested nearby on Aug. 16, 2001. When investigators interviewed the 33-year-old French Moroccan and asked him whether...
