...percent decline in since 1996, when applications were at an all-time high. The diagnosis? A strong economy gives bright students a wider range of options and less of a perceived need to seek out a "safe" profession (medical schools experienced similar fluctuations in the late '70s and early '80s during flush economic periods). Add to that the fact that some doctors report less-than-perfect job satisfaction under the HMO ledger, and suddenly life as "my son the doctor" doesn't seem so appealing...
...only they?d kept it to chat. San Francisco health officials were dismayed to discover that an AOL chat room had become ground zero for something not seen in the City By the Bay since the early '80s: an outbreak of syphilis. Officials have talked to seven gay men who had the disease ? all of whose last encounter was with someone they had met in "SFM4M" (San Francisco Men for Men). Fabrice Morvan, half of Milli Vanilli (his partner Rob Pilatus died of a drug and alcohol overdose last year), says, "For the first time I could show who I was as a person and an artist. I felt a sense of respect...
...life, wants to live in a nice small town, right? One with sidewalks, neighbors waving from their porches and a bustling central square within biking distance of your house? Trouble is, despite the growth of telecommuting, most jobs are still in cities and suburbs. That's why the late-'80s experiment of building cute little instant towns in places like Seaside, Fla., never really caught on: many of the communities were too far from major job centers. So now developers are chasing a new fashion. Rather than offer an escape from the suburbs, they're struggling to reinvent them...
