...begin chattering at once: American society in the late '90s is a busy chat room set up for just this kind of thing (Oklahoma City, O.J.), with noisy experts on tap, interrupting one another from different quadrants of the screen. We round up the usual suspects--in the current case, our cretinous popular culture; the Internet, with its rancid cul-de-sacs; violent movies; idiot television; vicious rap; ubiquitous sex. One high school counselor cast a wide net on MSNBC: "It's all those things, ekcedra, ekcedra, ekcedra." The "ekcedra" includes adolescence itself, a form of temporary insanity that...
...country watched Littleton last week, we seemed to be hurtling toward a National Moment, a late-'90s version of, say, the sinking of the Maine, or the Kent State shootings during Vietnam, or Rock Hudson's death. These moments can be dangerous, as such soul searching quickly turns into lawmaking. History may remember last week because of what happens in the next few weeks, so let's try to get it right...
...addition to finding our voices, TBTN has aggressively encouraged women to reclaim our bodies. Tuesday's "eat-in" provided an opportunity for women and men to indulge guiltlessly in pizza, ice cream and soda (diet not allowed). This event was a direct attack on '90s pop culture figures such as Ally McBeal--the feminist icon of our times, according to People and Time magazines--and Kate Moss. These women's ridiculously unattainable bodies often motivate an extra 10 minutes on the treadmill and create the will power to continuously decline dessert...
...Apparently, the idea to use sharks originated from the fact that sharks are one of the oldest species on Earth, as well as the fact that they are resilient to diseases. Still, this medical justification does nothing to dispel the feeling that this movie sounds like a pumped-up, '90s version of Jaws crossed with Jurassic Park. I mean, come on! Killer sharks threaten the lives of scientists on a sinking laboratory? Don't expect anything profound. Still, the supporting appearances of Samuel L. Jackson and Stellan Skarsgard help enhance the film's credibility, and in the area of special...
Weezer, the mid 90s staple in alternateen garage rock, has returned in its alter-ego form, The Rentals, and this time the results are promising. In Seven More Minutes, headman Matt Sharp convincingly demonstrates a wealth of creativity and originality underutilized in his subdued role as bassist and back-up vocalist for Weezer. The Rentals' first album, a minimally successful self-titled release, contained the primordial elements of electronically influenced guitar rock in the radio hits "Friends of P." and "Move On" that are fully realized here. Sharps' nonchalant vocals and silly lyrics are melodiously complemented by the omnipresent, wispy...
