...basic good stuff is still there. The band's best and perhaps most distinguishing feature--the surprising little vignettes of sound which switch you, with no attempt at subtlety, into a deliciously different musical genre for a few bars--makes itself felt in force: there's a '90s-style funk surprise in "Ode to Maybe" and even a hint of opera in "Red Summer Sun." Winner of the 1999 Booker Prize, Disgrace articulates the same concern as Coetzees 1990 novel Age of Iron, in which a retired Professor of Latins struggle with cancer is symbolic of the waning force of humanism. Until the 90s, humanism was the primary discourse of white opposition to apartheid. But the tenuous hope Coetzee expresses in Age of Iron for the survival of humanism despite the violence of South Africas transitional years (the late 80s and early 90s) seems to have been snuffed out in Disgrace. The crowd certainly did get up for the rest of the set, and the band's final song, the angst-ridden mid-'90s hit "High" which spawned some friendly, energetic shoving.
