...market boom has become a crucial source of economic well-being. That helps explain why consumer confidence has soared throughout the '90s even though the average paycheck rose barely until recently. "People who are retired have seen their assets double," says Jon McGeath, who manages the A.G. Edwards & Sons brokerage office in Oakland, Calif. "They've made more money than they ever did working, and it feels terrific...
...plays cover extremely different subject matters--Angels deals with the pain of the AIDS epidemic combined with the fear of the millennium’s end; while Slavs! pokes fun and raises questions about the state of the former Soviet Union during the late '80s and early '90s. In addition, the latter play doesn't contain the painful and poignant emotional turbulence that the former is famous for. To try to compare them any further would be useless. But rest assured that, if you were genuinely moved by the powerful presence of Angels last fall, you will probably enjoy...
...Magic itself is a surpassing entertainment, a hit show from its first launching. And though it means to recall an elite era, it certainly hasn't intimidated the dress-down Disney audience of the '90s. There were a few sublime moments, however, such as the Jean-Louis Scherrer cape, near left, and the appearance in Thierry Mugler's show of CYD CHARISSE, all 77 years of her, looking as va-va-voom as anyone...
Elkhart, Ind., was spotlighted as the "Recreational Vehicle Capital" of the U.S. I've had to deal with the Elkhart agency enforcing child support for 14 years. Yet even in the high-tech '90s, it is not yet computerized. It's been frustrating to cope with an overloaded system bogged down by a lack of commonplace technology. Perhaps instead of funding an RV museum that no one visits, Elkhart's city fathers could better spend the town's money on modernizing an antiquated system that forces dependent children to do without and allows deadbeat dads to go free. GERRI MOTTS...
