GAME SHOW NETWORK If this fin-de-siecle thing means anything, the game show will soon return in all its glory. And while we're rutted in the suburbanized '90s version of the genre--Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!--this station reminds us of all that game shows can be. The original programming can be stunningly bad (in particular, avoid the "comedy" show Faux Pause), but the repeats are groovy. The best stuff, of course, comes from Chuck Barris. The Gong Show is topped only by the short-lived Three's a Crowd, "the game that determines who knows...
...last time. It is easy to see this as Mastroianni's testament, but it is also Oliveira's. This amazing auteur, whose spare, poignant films (Doomed Love, The Cannibals) are rarely seen in the U.S., has been directing since 1929--and has made a film every year of the '90s. Puff Daddy, Dr. Dre, Master P and the like dominate the aesthetic space in black music. Boyz II Men may sell more albums, but when you think of what's hot, what's hip, what's real, what...
...marriage penalty is a peculiar "tax" levied mainly on married couples in which the husband and wife have similar incomes. Once relatively rare, pay parity in two-earner homes has become fairly common in the '90s--and there's the rub. Such households often pay more federal income tax married than if the two earners had remained single and just moved in together. How's that for Uncle Sam walking in on your love life...
