...this year the Aussies put on an Olympic show that makes you think that Oscar night might be better contracted out to Sydney-siders. Well, OK, there were a couple of sappy moments: the music sounded like retreaded ABBA, and the Olympic Hymn, sung in Greek, is a bore. But for the most part the whole event showed great flair and - most critically - a fine sense of humor. Given the opportunity to tell its national story to 3.7 billion television viewers around the world, few nations would include a segment celebrating the postwar suburban boom featuring funny-looking guys...
POPE JOHN PAUL II was teetering on the edge of obscurity. His last album, the well-reviewed, new-agey Abba Pater (which did not contain a Dancing Queen cover), came out more than a year ago. And as every big pop act knows, waiting too long between releases is a bad career move. Luckily, John Paul's follow-up record is on the way. World Voice 2000, due out in September, will feature original prayers penned by the Holy Father and read by a list of stars that could double as the cast for Cannonball Run III, including JAMES EARL...
...ordeal reminded me a bit of a movie from the early '90s, Muriel's Wedding. Muriel, a pathetic and overweight Abba-loving Aussie, weds a handsome Olympic swimmer she does not know so that the Olympic committee can consider him an Australian for competition. One of the movie's taglines claims, "She's not just getting married, she's getting even." Muriel was ostensibly rebelling against the ridicule and banter she endured as a lonely single woman. The film evoked pity and sympathy from audiences across the globe...
...know that money can't buy love, class or happiness, but you'd think it would have some influence over aging Scandinavian pop stars. Sadly, it is not so. The former band mates of ABBA, the globe-conquering Swedish quartet whose voices soared and members intermarried in the 1970s, have refused a $1 billion offer to reunite for a 100-concert tour. "It's a hell of a lot of money to say no to," said ABBA alum Benny Andersson, "but we decided it wasn't for us." The overture came from a U.S.-British consortium that prefers to remain...
...isolation of the mountainous orphanage and the gray and white sterility of its interior to the rolling shores of the coast and the vast stretches of the apple farms, the movie is set against a stunning landscape. Director Lasse Hallstrom (What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Something to Talk About, Abba: The Movie) strikes a balance between the dourness of the orphanage with the optimism of the coast, while not letting the movie get too caught up in either locale...
