...fact, Davis' role is small and she doesn't distinguish herself in it. But Reagan is impressive as a World War II naval hero with a hint of Bogart's neurotic Captain Queeg in The Caine Mutiny. In the attempt to discover Japanese sea lanes, submarine commander Casey Abbott makes a decision that kills 60 of his men. He is both firm in his belief that he did the greatest good for the greatest number and flooded with remorse for sending sailors he knew to an early death. The movie is unusual and mature in dramatizing the burdens of power...

...role of Encores! godfather, I'd designate George Abbott. That legendary ringmaster - whose Broadway career spanned 75 seasons and whose final job as director, of his own play "Broadway," opened on his 100th birthday - either wrote the book for, or originally directed or produced (sometimes all three), eight of the shows revived at City Center: "The Boys from Syracuse," "Pal Joey," "Out of This World," "Call Me Madam," "Wonderful Town," "The Pajama Game," "Fiorello!" and "Tenderloin." He also directed the 1926 play "Chicago," whose musical version would become Encores!' biggest hit when it transferred to Broadway...

It’s hilarious to watch the two men impotently muddle around with their pea-sized brains; it’s Abbott and Costello Meet Hamlet, except that neither man has any idea who’s on first. Broadwater’s Guildenstern is earnest and restless, always yammering questions and never getting answers. Hodgson’s Rosencrantz is a layabout twit, his perpetually gaping mouth suggesting a severely inbred bloodline. It is Stoppard’s genius to make these idiots the carriers of a profound existential dread; in Stoppard’s hands, Rosencrantz...

...Texas, a lower-court judge in Beaumont allowed two men who had been wed in Vermont to dissolve their union, but he reversed himself after state attorney general Greg Abbott argued that because Texas law prohibits gay marriage, the state cannot grant a gay divorce. If mediation fails, the only other alternative, says Houston attorney Jerry Simoneaux, is district court, where a judge might, for example, divide assets according to how much each partner contributes. Family court judges can weigh what is fair. "The person who stayed at home would lose a lot," Simoneaux says...
