...paper for libel, but the parties reached an agreement in which the paper would print an apology in its pages. The apology came last week in the form of a front-page headline that read, a humble and sincere apology to Mr. Steve Bing, philanthropist and humanitarian. The excessively abject tone of the retraction on the inside pages, as well as an article on a facing page suggesting that Americans lack the English proficiency at irony, led some, including Bing's lawyers, to believe the Mirror was not nearly so penitent as it should have been. ...Even so, the overall effect of the book is nothing short of heartbreaking. Children are abused and gang-raped. Smart women are given away in marriage to Party members who are manipulative brutes. Others are forced to wallow in abject poverty, scraping together whatever they can to feed themselves and their families. At several points, the agony and suffering here may become too overbearing for even the strongest soul; some readers will likely need to reach for a tissue and take a moment to recover from the wretched misery...

They have provided lavish services, hotels and amenities to tourists, yet do not permit native Cubans the right to even access some of these areas. Castro has not stopped these appalling practices; we must not be snowed into believing...

Luang Prabang's charms seem safe enough if the abject failure of its first full moon-style party, modeled on Thailand's island raves, is anything to go by. "Us backpackers have got to make our own fun," said a shaggy type who bounded up to me in Sisavangvong Road and thrust a flyer proclaiming the birth of the Full Mekong Party into my hand. "I'm the Great Disco Dane," he explained, assuring me the party would be "wicked." Around 9 p.m., I ventured down to the sandy strip where the ferries land?to find about 20 people sipping...
