Month ago Owner Rooney released two of his ablest backs. Last fortnight he sold three others. He even peddled the Whizzer but there were no buyers. Last week, looking like a one-man team, the Pirates played the Green Bay Packers, were slaughtered, 20-to-0. Whizzer White, who had carried the ball 81 times in six previous games (nearly twice as many as any other player in the league), had apparently only begun to work...

Unobtrusively slipping by after formal classes are over, afternoon and evening lectures on countless subjects are presented by some of the ablest and most prominent members of the Faculty. The sad story is that these do slip by, unnoticed and unattended except by an alert few. Lectures open to the public as well as students have the smallest College representation, mainly because undergraduates forget time and place or consider the effort needed to go, fruitless. Unfortunately for them, they are passing by an irretrievable chance to learn something about subjects which are only names to the mind, or to pursue...

...major changes in his technique. Otherwise, his performance is well up to the standard of similar roles in Lloyd's of London and Marie Antoinette. In a supporting cast which includes Joseph Schildkraut, Henry Stephenson, Nigel Bruce and Director Miles Mander, drafted for the role of Disraeli, the ablest member is Producer Zanuck's latest Continental star. Less mannered than unfortunate little Simone Simon, Annabella (real name: Suzanne Charpentier) chatters intelligibly, looks pretty in gamine or Empire costume and chokes to death affectingly during the zobah-hah. Most impressive shot: cave-in of a canal-side cliff dynamited...

...Benes will be "the President" to most of his countrymen until he dies. Yet there have always been some Czechs who feel he was mistaken in not making such a compromise with Nazidom as Poland made in 1934. Ablest of these is probably Dr. Frantisek Chvalkovsky. who has an American wife and long lived in the U. S. Dr. Benes has by no means been at odds with Dr. Chvalkovsky, whom he employed as Czechoslovak Minister to Italy until last week and before that to Germany...

Presbyterian Princeton Seminary last week took a strategic seat in the theological van. To Princeton as guest professor (one year) of Systematic Theology -and possibly to fill permanently its Hodge professorship in that subject- came one of the ablest of European theologians, Dr. Emil Brunner, late of the University of Zurich. Princeton thus reinforced its support of the "New Orthodoxy," the new theology based on old revealed truths and largely associated with the name of Switzerland's Karl Earth (TIME, April 25). Often bracketed with Earth, but not his follower, Dr. Brunner is a Bible theologian, orthodox enough...
