...last week was the statement (upon being landed safely in Great Britain) of Captain F. C. P. Harris of the freighter Clement, sunk early last month off South America's east coast. Captain Harris and his first engineer, W. Bryant, certified that the Nazi raider which kept them aboard five hours after sinking their Clement was the pocket battleship Admiral Scheer. This identity could still be doubted by people who know that German sailors wear bogus hatbands some of the time, to confuse their victims; but English freighter captains and Scottish engineers are hard to fool...

Off a fiord north of Bergen, the German prize crew requested that because of a sick man aboard, it should be allowed to put in at Haugesund, 60 miles south of Bergen and last port before the jump-off into British-patrolled waters. A doctor from Olaf Tryggvason went aboard, but all he could find by way of sickness was a man who had barked his shin...

...cloud of smoke was shown over the cruiser Edinburgh, described as a bomb striking the ship's port side aft of the second funnel. Official British account of the Firth of Forth raid maintained that Edinburgh was not hit directly, but suffered seven casualties when fragments flew aboard from bombs striking the water nearby. Where there is smoke there is not necessarily a hit, and the picture may have told the truth even if someone else lied...
With such diverting thoughts, the Wolfs prisoners did not complain of the tropic heat that turned their filthy prison into a fetid Turkish bath, nor of their grim diet, nor of the dhobie itch and typhus brought aboard by Japanese prisoners, nor even of scurvy, which began to rot them on the voyage home, through a hurricane that left the Wolf leaking 40 tons of water an hour, through the ice-jammed Arctic and the dreaded North Sea blockade.
