...judges didn't get into any of that. In its closely reasoned ruling, the court laid out why it believed evidence that the bomb, concealed in a Toshiba radio-cassette player, was placed in a brown Samsonite suitcase amid clothes purchased in Malta. Exactly how that suitcase was spirited aboard an Air Malta flight to Frankfurt is unknown, but the court was convinced that it had been, that it was transferred to a Pan Am flight in Frankfurt and then in London again to the New York-bound plane. The court put ample credence in Maltese shopowner Tony Gauci...
...that the big deal about Destiny - that experiments can last longer? It's not just that. Destiny really does represent an advance over the facilities on Mir. When U.S. astronauts flew aboard Mir in the 1990s they were working with 20-year-old technology. Because the science racks on Destiny are modular, they can be returned to Earth on shuttles and replaced with newer technology whenever that is practical. If people are still living on the ISS 25 years from now, they won't be working with technology from 1995, when was Boeing started building the module...
...those zillions go?). But it is not good diplomacy to relinquish a carrot that reinforces the better instincts of Mr. Putin, who is casting about for allies against American "hegemonism." Iraq sanctions? The Europeans are chafing under that burden, but you court futility if you don?t get them aboard for at least those sanctions that constrain Saddam?s military options...
...lacks its required gun. The winds created by its dual 38-ft. rotors are so strong that landing in a desert kicks up sand "brownouts" that can blind pilots and rescuing someone from the sea is made extremely difficult. Marines climbing down ropes from Ospreys in combat simulations aboard ships or oil platforms have to hit the deck and stay there until the aircraft departs or risk being blown overboard. Communications gear aboard the Osprey is so ineffective that the plane cannot efficiently contact other aircraft, nor can it land at some airports without escort planes outfitted with better electronics...
...NETHERLANDS Lockerbie Appeal Five Scottish judges began hearing an appeal by the man convicted of planting the bomb that killed 259 people aboard a Pan Am flight in 1988. Lawyers for Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi told the special court at Camp Zeist that new evidence would "tear holes" in the ruling, which jailed al-Megrahi for 20 years. They said statements from a security guard at London's Heathrow Airport showed that the bomb could have originated there, and that the trial judges had erred in relying on the evidence of a Maltese shopkeeper who identified the accused...
