This is a bad road to travel. Abraham Lincoln described the presidency as an office that would drive a man to his knees. We should not be making it harder for Presidents to find solace. And their preachers should be able to mount the pulpit and speak from the heart, without obsessing over what it will look like on YouTube. Is there a reason we can't get this relationship right? I don't agree with secular critics that a pluralist democracy has to be a religion-free zone, if only because it's unrealistic to expect voters or candidates...
There is a common misconception among Americans that Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves with a stroke of his pen. Yet the Emancipation Proclamation, which went into effect on Jan. 1, 1863, did no such thing - or, at least, it didn't do a very good job of it. Two and a half years later, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers sailed into Galveston, Texas, announced the end of the Civil War, and read aloud a general order freeing the quarter-million slaves residing in the state. It's likely that none of them had any idea that they had actually...
Barack Obama has never been shy about comparing himself to Abraham Lincoln. He did so when he announced his candidacy at the Illinois state capitol, where both he and Lincoln served in the legislature. "The life of a tall, gangly, self-made Springfield lawyer tells us that a different future is possible," Obama said. "He tells us that there is power in words ... He tells us that there is power in hope." That was, well, audacious, to say the least - and the comparisons have continued, on issues large and small. But the most important similarity, in Obama's mind...
...young man from a country where the average person takes home less than $2 a day, and access to clean water and electricity are minimal. But his background may have forged both Peter's resilience and his drive to succeed. "You had to be tough at our school," remembers Abraham Nelson, a former classmate of Peter's. "In mechanics class, we dealt with heavy engines, and we would see who could carry the engines by themselves. We would also test the engine heat with our bare hands and say to each other, 'If you're strong put your hands...
...significant fundraising advantage since before the primaries began and was anointed the presumptive nominee as early as February when he won eight primaries in a row, he has made scant progress with Hillary’s half of the electorate. Maybe he’s Saint Francis Assisi, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan rolled into one and won’t need any help with any segment of the population going into the fall. But the available evidence is that the “Reagan Democrat” has had qualms about voting for Democratic presidential candidates since 1968, votes...
