...only major problem lies in the script itself. The abrupt, anticlimactic denouement fails to resolve all the political and moral issues it raises. But as entertainment, Pass the Butler is more than satisfying. Fans awaiting the next Python flick should not pass this Butler and miss the antics of these would-be Pythonites...

Terry O'Quinn as the stepfather carries the burden of this suspense expertly, equally convincing in all his character's twisted levels of reality. His abrupt facial shifts from genial daddy to iron-jawed psycho are scary as hell--the expressions of contained violence, forced cheer, and wistful longing that flicker through this dude's eyes would shame many a Max Factor model. This guy really wants a happy family, and you see it in his face as he pitifully watches happy neighbors prancing around their lawns. Gotta love his end, it's just his means that send Oedipal chills...

...drowsing lioness at midday stirs in the grasses under a flat-topped acacia tree. She yawns, and her mouth is an abrupt vision of medieval horrors, of ripping white spikes. And then the mouth closes and she is a smug, serene Victorian dowager. She complacently surveys her young, who sleep near by, and subsides again into her torpor...
