...height of 10,350 ft. above sea level, Roch Run has a vertical drop of 2,500 ft. in one and three-quarters miles. It begins in the clear above timber line, winds through wooded traverses, over rocky slopes, abandoned mine shafts, ending in a sharp pitch with an abrupt runout at the finish. Six times an old mining road crosses the course. Chief hazard, however, is the "Big Corkscrew"-five great curves down a 34-degree slope through a glade 50 feet wide. Those who take it in tight curves close to the centre line pick up so much...

...paper back totally uncorrected, except for the single terse remark: "Clover--but not true." This one phrase well strikes the effect of the Martinu quartet. It was dazzlingly clever. As far as I could see, it capitalized on every music sure-fire ever invented: catchy, inclusive rhythms, abrupt changes in tempo, wild polytonality, a string technique which graded off from whole pages of unbearably shrill violin-chatter at some times to a Brahmsian luxuriance at others; to boot, reams of discordant counterpoint and impressively dull masses of sound. Last fall he hung the stars and stripes outside his studio office, tacked up a sign proclaiming it a Marine recruiting station. After Thursday-night drills with his outfit, Woody would stride into Chasen...

Catastrophe was foreseeable and abrupt. Foreshadowed in 1873 when England paid $27 for 2,000 smuggled rubber seeds,* whose planting was a failure, Brazil's ultimate doom was sealed in 1876 when Sir Henry Wickham brought out over 70,000 seeds of which 2,397 took and were eventually transported to British Malaya...

With good reason to mistrust the U. S. S. R.'s revolutionary political policy, the capitalist countries went on to mistrust her nonaggressive foreign policy. Two dates in recent history seem to mark abrupt changes in that policy: 1934, when Russia joined the League of Nations, and 1939, when she signed her Non-Aggression Treaty with Germany. Neither act was a change of objective, but merely a change of method...
