...this show of crashing unanimity, one M.P. was conspicuously absent: Milovan Djilas, the purged and disgraced Vice President who had gabbled too much about the rigid Marxism and flexible love lives of his fellow top Communists (TIME, Jan. 18 et seq.). "Political pornography," one of his critics called it. Djilas sent word that he had resigned his seat. To succeed him as Assembly President, the members last week unanimously elected Mosa Pijade, 64, a gnomelike little man whose friendly, avuncular air (covering the steely core of a seasoned revolutionist) has earned him the nickname Cica (uncle). Even the fine scene between mother and son is as masculine in its appeal as a trumpet call; it is the cello note, rather than poetry itself, that is absent from the play. Coriolanus is more Roman and less human, more heroic and less tragic than Julius Caesar or Antony and Cleopatra. Yet that is to describe rather than disparage it. ...looks like a group of very worldly people. In the first act he encourages us to assimilate them to familiar theatrical types. Lucasta Angel is a rather spoiled and forward young woman. B. Kaghan is a flashy sort of practical joker who is amusingly disrespectful concerning Lady Elizabeth, the absent-minded dowager who dabbles in spiritualism. After the first act there was much disappointed all in the lobby about the predictable lines, tired characterizations, and old fashioned exposition. In the second act our conceptions of these characters are wrenched out of shape. In response to Simpkins, the spiritual figure...

...Three's Bermuda conference, the absent, uninvited Chancellor of West Germany was even more a participant than France's ailing Premier, who spoke scarcely a word. Before dispatching to Moscow their agreement to a Big Four conference in Berlin, the Big Three leaders solicited Adenauer's approval. When Prime Minister Churchill suggested it might be wise to consider some alternative to EDC for Germany's rearmament, President Eisenhower dismissed the proposal with a wave of his hand. The U.S. will not consider alternatives, said the President, and besides, "EDC is what Adenauer wants...
