Death on Foam. The basic strategy in wet-suit design is not to keep water out but to let just enough in to absorb body heat and circulate it. To achieve that end, manufacturers used a specially treated synthetic rubber called foam neoprene (containing tiny bubbles of trapped gas for better insulation) that allowed the proper slow seepage of water. But the early wet suits looked as awful as dry suits, only wetter. And they were black. Dye, it turned out, was death on foam neoprene; any injection of color considerably weakened the rubber. So did regular exposure...
Guillet's team got around such problems by finding a way to chemically bond groups of "sensitized" molecules directly into the plastic's carbon chain. When these "S" groups absorb ultraviolet light from direct sunlight, he says, their carbon "backbones" soon begin to be decomposed by microorganisms. But indoors-even in front of glass windows-they will not be affected. Guillet claims that the speed of the breakdown can be controlled by varying the number of "S" groups bonded into the plastic molecules. He also thinks that the process would raise the price of plastics by only...
...first time in long hours, the tired men in Mission Control breathed easier. But the astronauts did not. Houston soon noticed that carbon dioxide exhaled by the astronauts was building up to a dangerous level in the lunar module's atmosphere; lithium hydroxide air purifiers in Aquarius, designed to absorb the potentially lethal gas for only relatively short periods of time, were becoming saturated. The deactivated command module was equipped with more purifiers, but their canisters were not interchangeable with the LM's. Mission Control instructed the astronauts to lead a second hose into the command module and connect...
...ending with a two-hour musical clean-up. (Mayor Alfred E. Vellucci has suggested that Earth People begin to make regular use of Kingsley Park adjacent to Fresh Pond for day and evening celebrations.) People should bring anything and everything to raise goodvibes, and a plastic garbage bag to absorb the excess. People also should walk or do anything else to get to the Festival rather than drive in cars. Containers of all kinds used at the Festival (like people should each bring a jug of cider, or try and get stores to contribute them) will be recycled into...
...freshman had been involved in transferring the drugs, without making a profit, to another student. After the marijuana was stolen from him, the freshman told his sources, allegedly undergraduates on scholarship, that he could not pay them. They told him that they would "absorb" the $1000 loss...
