...Czechoslovak territory, Germany has now received a grand total of only 10,885 square miles. More heartening was word that Germany would like to cut in with Britain on the forthcoming U. S.-British trade agreement. Germany would take what U. S. and Dominions raw materials Britain could not absorb, pay the British for it with German machinery, chemicals, optical goods...
More significant than these findings, however, were microscopic examinations of cells of freshly killed and newly dead rabbits. Ordinarily the leucocytes (white blood cells) which circulate aimlessly through the body, flow with great rapidity to a site of infection, where they envelop and absorb the invading bacteria. No leucocytes gathered to defend the intoxicated rabbits. Contrary to common medical belief, said Dr. Pickrell, alcohol does not paralyze the defensive leucocytes. Rather it prevents the blood vessels from dilating and makes their walls impermeable, thus trapping the leucocytes and preventing their migration...
This week Weco Products Co. (Dr. West's) marketed the first toothbrush with synthetic bristles replacing the standard hog bristles imported from northern China. ...Alan Sterling Parkes of the National Institute for Medical Research at London grew tired of performing innumerable injections in their laboratory, decided that they needed a "laborsaving device." They had a hunch that if man could carry around a substantial, fairly permanent store of extra hormones, his body would absorb as large an amount as was physically possible; just as a camel gradually draws energy from his hump...
