...idea of "unilateral separation" from the Palestinians, as first suggested by Ehud Barak. That would involve Israel simply putting up a defensible wall and keeping Palestinians out, allowing them to establish a state on whatever piece of territory Israeli deigns cede. Again, an idea that may appeal in abstract, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty of what do about Jerusalem or the settlers dotted throughout Palestinian territory, it starts to look a little implausible. More importantly, the whole purpose of negotiating a final peace deal with the Palestinians had been to settle Palestinian political claims against Israel...

...idea of what's going on is a bit more personalized. "If God would ask me to suffer this significantly, I think He has something significant He wants to do with it through me, if only just in my heart," she says. Her concept of evil is less abstract than David's. The Bible is replete with instances in which "Jesus may not be the author of evil, but He permitted it [for reasons of His own]," she notes. She recalls His telling Peter after the Last Supper that Satan has asked "to sift you like wheat," a metaphor suggesting...

...horse or car? And in Porcellino's case, it perfectly reflects the almost Zen quality of his writing. At the end of "Mountain Song" a muskrat (scarcely more than an oval with a line at the back) slips into a pond. Wordlessly, Porcellino then draws several panels of vaguely abstract images that could be either details of the pond or even increasingly distant images of the pond. The beauty is that both ideas are right. In the last panel he asks, "What is this world" and we share his wonder...

...Okinawa, geopolitics seem abstract, but life in the shadow of the American military does produce strange anomalies. On Saturday and Sunday, following the furor over Friday's alleged rape, the Kadena base opened its gates to visitors for an "American Fest" with carnival rides, a haunted house and a menu of hotdogs, hamburgers and barbecued ribs. One of the visitors, 27-year-old Kaori Teruya, stepped inside a huge transport plane, the reports of the rape attack not far from her mind. "My girlfriends and I are always bothered by these American servicemen," Teruya said. "I am scared." The disturbing...
