Sensibly, the screenwriters and Nair aren't coy about Earhart's likely fate. There are no absurd conspiracy theories involving the Japanese or suggestions of her making safe landing on some deserted island - just communication blunders and furrowed brows (a Swank specialty), and then she and the plane are gone, vanished in the typical way of small planes running out of fuel over a vast ocean. It's not even particularly sad until Nair rolls the documentary footage of the real Earhart. There, grainy and distant, is the "ghost of aviation," as Joni Mitchell called her in the 1976 song...
...Marat/Sade,” Peter Weiss’ violent, absurd, revolutionary drama, is both a wonder and headache. It’s a play within a play of the most perverse sort—the death of a radical written by a libertine and performed by lunatics; a thick weave of freedom and surveillance, change and identity brought together with a tense, gripping energy (and the occasional musical interlude). But it’s also a drama about events which took place 200 years ago driven by theories of theater half that age. One look at the show?...
While Ishiguro’s depiction of the confrontation with failure appears wanting, his examination of protective psychological mechanisms remains one of the strongest points of the collection, underscoring both life’s pathos and surrealism. Ishiguro examines the absurdity of how humans protect themselves from the outside world and the moment in which this protection begins to wear down. Eloise McCormack, the self-professed virtuoso cellist who coaches young Tibor on his technique, eventually confesses that she cannot play the cello. She justifies this by claiming that other, less-gifted teachers would have destroyed her innate gift...
Left with an absurd amount of plot leeway, “All Saints Day” busies itself engaging in a self-referential elevation of campiness. While a great deal of the humor in the original hinged upon the brothers’ bungled attempts to recreate old action movie scenes, “All Saints Day” makes a conscious attempt to churn out fantastically outlandish fight scenes and hard-boiled, quotable one-liners. Murphy kicks off a killing campaign by cheekily remarking to his brother, “Let’s do some gratuitous violence...
...November, the month that has become the peak growing season for this unlikely word-of-mouth - and sight-of-mouth - movement. Both groups of facial-hair fundraisers want guys to ignore both fashion trends and the skepticism of significant others to sprout a 'stache for a month, the more absurd the better...
