Only a tiny bit of thought is required before arriving at the answer: this movie is absurd. I don’t mean absurd like other action movies are absurd. It’s so absurd that you lose your zombie-like fixation on the thousandth shot in a row of Jessica Alba’s bikini-clad bottom wiggling through a sea full of sharks and shout, “They can’t hold their breath for five minutes while fighting cocaine-dealers and heaving treasure chests around, surface for a quick breath, and then return...

Perhaps the strangest part of the video is its absurd abstraction of the titular call-out for immolation. Lots and lots of people put their cigarette lighters up to show support for Kim’s flaunting of the judicial system, but there are also an alarming number of shots of people shooting flame-throwers. Guests including actresses Elizabeth Hurley and Chloë Sevigny watched a movie documenting two decades of D&G's sexy, streamlined signatures before the models stomped out in fresh white eyelet bustier dresses...

...this drawn-out allusion to Dante is purposeful, it raises the discomforting and rather absurd suggestion that New Yorkers are themselves somehow guilty for 9/11. But even if the allusion to Dante is unintentional – as one would hope – then McDonell’s treatment of 9/11 is still both mystifying and maddening. The terrorist attacks are portrayed as a sort of reflection of Mike’s personal tragedies. His mother and father, who form a dysfunctional and unloving couple, have cast a shadow over his childhood, and the fall of the Twin Towers...

...spite of the contentiousness of the hearings, the Democratic senators injected humor into their speeches on Wednesday. Saying the proceedings were “getting a little more absurd the further we move,” Schumer soon prompted laughs from an audience that had become acquainted with Roberts’ rhetorical patterns...
