...American weapons. But the Administration was dismayed that the Prime Minister offered not even symbolic concessions in the five-hour session. Said Begin afterward: "If anyone should think that one sovereign country should consult another about a specific military operation to defend its citizens, that would be absurd." Begin neither intimated that Israel would engage in soul searching before undertaking such a raid again nor signaled any possible movement on the stalled negotiations with Egypt about Palestinian autonomy. McFarlane left with nothing more than a limp, almost meaningless, joint communiqué that said: "Any misunderstandings that might have arisen have...

...really come through). His gestures become more frantic, his reasoning more strident as he is the antithesis of Louis, who prides himself on his logic and dispassionate aloofness, and his slightly cynical humor. The two wander around the outline on the apartment floor, the play delves into the absurd and it is full of discordant, funny bits. All of this changes, however, when Randolph gives his theory of the cases--an increasingly bizarre trip through the reaches of what pilots call the envelope--a theory of music, of being, a crypto-musical little speech which marks the real opening...

Edwards' script follows the pattern of his direction. He strikes on target at the beginning, setting up his figures to be knocked into the dust. The shadow that Tinsel Town casts on the lives of his characters, the absurd system of priorities that makes an angry man quote box office figures to his wife in the heat of the argument: These are the moments when Edwards nears his goal. Colonel Gaddafi's comments on international terrorism are absurd. He is a prime example of one who exploits troubled fellow African nations to justify his expansionism. I was a resident in N'Djamena, Chad, until February 1979, when I was forced to leave. As I followed the events in Chad, I was amazed by Gaddafi's intervention and changing support for the various factions...

Yale's Robert Triffin, for example, says that it is "an absurd waste of human resources to dig gold in distant corners of the earth for the sole purpose of transporting it and reburying it immediately afterward in other deep holes." Yet gold's hold on the general public remains. As Janos Fekete, the deputy head of the National Bank of Hungary, once explained at a conference of monetary experts: "There are about 300 economists who are against gold - and they might...
