...YEARS BACK, HOWARD MOHR of A Prairie Home Companion wrote a book called How to Talk Minnesotan. Was it funny? Hey, you betcha. So are the twistings of that frosty, flabbergastingly flat accent as heard on the Minnesota-based Mystery Science Theater 3000. Two other gifted natives, the filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, have apparently never got over the giggle value of their regional dialect. Fargo, their derisive new true-crime comedy, could be subtitled How to Laugh at People Who Talk Minnesotan...

Some of the routines work much better than others. The clever depiction of Lazarus' descent into hell as a breaking news story complete with a newschopper hovering between the Kingdoms of God and Satan was clever and fun. However, another scene narrated in a stereotypical French accent was just downright irritating. When two actors impersonating Siskel and Ebert exclaim after Frenchie finishes, "That was the worst scene I've ever seen," one can't help but not in agreement. Of the more than a dozen parable skits performed, too many were difficult to follow, easily forgotten and bother-some interruptions...

Green gives a particularly good performance as Diabetes, the actor; he has great stage presence and handles the role with natural charm. Smith has her New York accent down from the moment she pops up out of the audience to enter into the philosophical debate, weilding a degree in gym from Brooklyn College. Whether they're on stage the entire time or shouting three lines from the audience, the cast really comes together...
