...riveting and touching experience. Of particular note was the versatile Aditi Mallick ’08. In “Prom Night” (adapted by Sen), she was hilarious as a ditzy teen who resists her boyfriend’s attempts to have sex. From her exaggerated Indian accent to her commendable performance of getting intimate with the boyfriend (who the audience had to imagine), Mallick’s performance was side-splitting. Later, in “Younger Wife” a completely transformed Mallick was seen kneeling on the ground, washing her husband’s feet...
...begin to fervently believe that there simply must be sinister doings afoot—hardly the ideal setting for frivolity and wit. Johansson and Hunt give tepid performances, to say the very least. Johansson, playing the stereotypically naïve Midwestern girl, is insufferably proud of herself. Her American accent jars horrendously with the smooth delivery of the British actors, and she spends so much of the film looking saintly that you wonder if she’s capable of original thought. Ordinarily an impressive actress, here Johansson seems more preoccupied with her clothing than with her acting. Hunt...
...Memoirs of a Geisha was very well written [Jan. 9]. Although this depiction of the geisha tradition of Japan will surely become a worldwide hit, the fact that the "main geishas are played by Chinese women speaking English, which they were taught to intone in a lightly Japanese accent," will make the movie, for me, completely unwatchable. Dan Bloom Chiayi City, Taiwan Memoirs Of A Geisha may be a good film, but any culture that uses women in a patronizing way deserves to be criticized. Societies that respect women will progress; the rest will degenerate. Krishna Raman Chennai, India Corliss...

The used books packed into the shop’s shelves include a substantial selection of works on Nixon-era politics and a number of nursing and emergency-rescue textbooks.A glass display case shows off the promised coins, but Marshall explains that a friend of his manages the coin collection. ...same fate. Sofia is a tragic heroine and Richardson is absolutely luminous in the role, both mesmerizingly beautiful and heartbreakingly pitiable. Fiennes is equally heartrending as a man looking for redemption in a world he can’t see. The British actor has a fine American accent and his captivating facial expressions, especially when he regards Sofia, are worth sitting through this sometimes tedious two-and-a-half hour film. Throughout the film he seems unsure whether or not the beautiful Russian returns his feelings, as he hesitates with both speech and movement. The interactions between Fiennes and Richardson...
