What works best about Skin is that it doesn't let you accept or reject those rationalizations easily. This is a smart show with a lot of visual pop, and the Roam-Goldman, ego-id dichotomy is especially intriguing. (Roam represents how America votes at the ballot box; Goldman, how we vote with our wallets.) But the first two episodes are too dour and somber, especially when Silver is not onscreen. Perhaps because the producers want to avoid glamorizing porn with too light a tone, Skin is so high-mindedly determined to depict porn as a scourge...
...what one commentator called "the personification of free China." Slim and graceful, clad in a black cheongsam, she wooed, wowed and chastised her spellbound listeners with a blend of compliments, barbs and pungent assertions. "We in China are convinced that it is the better half of wisdom not to accept failure ignominiously but to risk it gloriously," she said. After she sat down, a Congressman confessed, "I never saw anything like it. Madame Chiang had me on the verge of bursting into tears." At the age of 106, Soong Mei-ling died last week in New York City...

Poker requires you not merely to accept, but to enjoy and revel in the random distribution of the cards. This, I think, is the crux of my frustration. If you’re not able to accept the cards you’ve been given, if you’re not able to rejoice when fortune throws you a good hand even though you had nothing to do with...
...This is a familiar union song-similar to the argument against school vouchers-that grows less powerful as urban schools grow worse. The fact that charter-school teachers in Detroit are not union members probably had something to do with the union's stand too (Ross said he would accept a union if his teachers wanted one). But Garrison took the argument a step further: "If someone from the outside came to Bob Thompson's suburban town and said, ?I'm gonna give you a lot of money for education, but we spend it my way,' they just wouldn...
