...York's Governor Nelson Rockefeller was at least a possibility to go to the U.N., but a meeting last week with Nixon only hardened Rocky's conviction that he would rather remain Governor. Some observers also thought it doubtful that his brother David Rockefeller would accept a Nixon offer to become Secretary of the Treasury...
Diabolical Threats. The report makes clear that Mayor Richard Daley and his police and military aides appeared to accept at face value all of the fiery statements made by the demonstration leaders. Chicago's newspapers repeatedly listed diabolical threats aimed at the city, ranging from burning Chicago down by flooding the sewers with gasoline, to dumping LSD in the water supply, to having 10,000 nude bodies float on Lake Michigan. While many Israelis accept Shalit's arguments, a formal cleavage between religion and state would doubtless destroy the coalition of secular and Orthodox Jews that has governed Israel since 1948. When the Cabinet of former Premier David Ben-Gurion attempted to accept Jews simply by their own affirmation in 1958, the resulting controversy nearly destroyed his government. Already one of the leaders of Israel's National Religious Party has warned that any decision...
