...Little Women seems the prototype of the gentle, graying mother is nevertheless a strong woman. She holds the family together through financial difficulty, war and illness. Rose as well is a strong woman. She braves her family's ridicule and a vague, whispered condemnation by her rich society to accomplish her goals. The Jo of Little Women is a strong woman. She is so strong, in fact, that she almost eclipses her gentle German husband; when she grows up and runs the school, it is to her that the children come for advice and comfort...

There is one fairly devastating measure of what the talks apparently did not accomplish. The communiqué disposes of Cambodia in one sentence, stating merely that "Article 20 of the [January] agreement regarding Cambodia and Laos shall be scrupulously implemented." Yet fierce fighting still rages along the access routes to Phnom-Penh, as U.S. warplanes continue flying combat missions. ...Honda's machine-as well as in versions under development by other companies-a mixture of fuel that would ordinarily be too lean to ignite in the cylinder is coaxed into burning by the ignition of an adjoining layer of much richer fuel. Victory at Belmont would make Secretariat the first winner of the Triple Crown for three-year-olds since Citation turned the trick a quarter-century ago. He would be only the ninth horse in 91 years to accomplish the grand slam. The odds against any modern horse finishing first in all three races have grown longer every year. When Citation did it, he was one of about 6,000 three-year-old thoroughbreds on the books of the Jockey Club. Flat racing has become far more popular and populous since then, and Secretariat started out with about 25,000 contemporaries...

SINCE ITS INVENTION by the Cubists early in this century, collage has served as a sharp metaphor for what the modern artist in any field must accomplish. In the twentieth century, to be an artist means to assemble available bits and pieces into a new order. The show of collages by Robert Motherwell now at the Museum of Fine Arts demonstrates the progress of the medium under the hands of one its most skillful practitioners since Picasso. Motherwell's collages, like those of the Cubists or of Kurt Schwitters, attempt to bring a new kind of immediate reality back into...
