...edge in a fight over Taiwan. The U.S. has said it can't tolerate a nuclear-armed North Korea, but if no deal is struck, a confrontation - and perhaps a regional nuclear arms race - becomes a more likely scenario. FISCAL AND TRADE ISSUES The huge U.S. budget and current-account deficits have not been unduly punished by the markets because everyone wants the U.S. economic engine to keep going. But terror attacks or more instability in the Middle East could provoke soaring oil prices and a run on the dollar that would hurt the U.S. economy and put Bush...

Other states, such as New York, Florida and Illinois have alternate cellmate assigning policies that take into account gang affiliations while not necessarily separating by race. California’s system, however, creates an environment where prisoners develop racial biases, creating more severe problems when they are released back into society...

Tommyland, written with journalist Anthony Bozza, is not all killer--in fact there's quite a bit of filler--but the good stuff is as good as the gold in Goldschläger. Lee's account of the four months he spent in solitary confinement--spousal abuse was the charge--conveys genuine suffering. The best scene in the book occurs when the Peppers first hook up with drummer Chad Smith, who walks...
