...police are investigating whether Dumont, a French national of Algerian descent who lived in Japan on and off in 2002 and 2003, was setting up a terrorist ring in the country. The local press have reported that Dumont, who worked as a used-car exporter, opened a postal savings account in July 2002 and deposited or withdrew several thousands of dollars from his account about 45 times until his final departure from the country last September, though it remains unclear whether any of those transactions were suspect. The press also say Dumont made frequent phone calls...

...Thailand: United I was disappointed with the article "The Road to Jihad?," concerning the situation in the three southern provinces of Thailand [May 10]. The article contains sweeping assertions that could only mislead your readers and gives a distorted account of the unfortunate events in the southern part of Thailand. Contrary to the claims by the writers of the article, the incidents on April 28 involving the attacks staged by militants on police and military posts in the south of Thailand have no connection whatsoever with "jihad" or any underlying religious conflict. The incidents that occurred are part...

...last year (if you even got one), senior executives felt theirs. Median compensation for CEOs of companies in the S&P 500 rose 27% in 2003 on top of an 11.4% hike in 2002, according to the latest pay survey by the Corporate Library. Other surveys, which don't account for exercised stock options, found just single-digit increases in salary and bonus. And, yes, corporate profits rose sharply during 2003, up 18%. But that wasn't the case in 2002, and the gap between pay for the average worker and the typical large-company CEO has widened further...

PHONE IT IN If you want to place a legitimate bet, the easiest way for a novice player to write a Belmont ticket is to start a New York Racing Authority (NYRA) account via telephone. Call 1-800-THE-NYRA; you no longer need to deposit a $100 minimum to bet the Stakes, since NYRA has changed the required balance to a buck. You can phone in bets a minute before post time, but leave at least a week to set up the account because you must mail a check to New York. NYRA accepts wagers from residents...

...Brasco's account is a how-to manual for made men, with chapters such as "How Wiseguys Take Over a Business" (start violent fights in a bar, then press the owner for "insurance protection") and "Wiseguy Table Manners" (tough guys order before the ladies). Given the colorful subject matter, his writing at times seems a bit dry, even formal. (Maybe that's because Pistone was in law enforcement, used to filling out just-the-facts-ma'am crime reports.) Still, the skinny here is often sensational, and reading the section about how to carry out a hit will almost make...
