...also allows impatient publishers to rush out red-hot, news-inspired books ahead of the competition. Last week Pocket Books trumpeted the release of a POD edition of Knockdown by Martin Dugard. The book, an account of the 1998 Sydney-to-Hobart yacht-race disaster that claimed six lives, won't be finished in hard cover until September. But the POD copies will be competitive with rivals...
Schnitzler's fascinating account of an opulent palace of sex and mirthful ritual has been turned into much the opposite. True, most critics and fans have raved about Jocelyn Pook's spooky score, the beautiful costuming, the fantastic lighting and the haunting ceremony. The problem, however, is that Kubrick's vision misinterprets Schnitzler's theme: That sex is so deceptive and dangerous because it involves a playout of fantasy. Heredity is not the explanation either. Who knows? Perhaps the subterranean fissures of the Type A internalized--bad spiritual habits, no doubt. Angers, self-lacerations, demons and opacities of character...
...Subscription fees account for 85 percent of AOL's global revenue, but the high cost of local telephone calls ? metered by the minute in Britain ? make Internet access a more expensive proposition than in the U.S. Freeserve and 100-odd imitators hope to get a piece of the telephone charges (sometimes 60 percent of the total charges), in addition to revenues from advertising and e-commerce.
