Lost in the Stars, as many of you may know, is based on Cry, the Beloved Country, the recent best-seller about white-Negro tension in South Africa. The TIME account was of a touring exhibition of South African paintings and sculpture at the National Gallery in Washington. Conspicuous in the show, said TIME'S Editors, were the vivid works of G. Sekoto, the only Negro artist included, who had taught himself to paint in Johannesburg, then left his native land to study in Paris, only to find poverty and despair, to attempt suicide and to be committed...
...fourth book Lowry has now written the story that most American novelists write first, the autobiographical novel. The Big Cage is the account of the education, boyhood, family life, first writings and first loves of a writer. It is the recurrent theme of recent American literature, the story of Look Homeward, Angel, of Moon-Calf, A World I Never Made, The Genius, This Side of Paradise and innumerable other tales of sensitive, gifted and egocentric youth at war with the narrow constraints of American culture...

When it was over she tremblingly left the room and, whispering "My stomach aches," took her place with other waiting youngsters...
...word translation, the phrase "as complicated as a Rube Goldberg invention" became "more complicated than existentialism." A "hoot-nanny" emerged as a corrida (i.e., bullfight). Rose's untranslatable "razzle-dazzle and razzmatazz" was altered into the equally untranslatable "plaisanter sur des plaisanteries plaisantes." Rose's laconic account of the end of a riot at his Texas Centennial Exposition ("The brawl was over") was elaborately transformed into "My savage cowboys became as well-behaved as [Paris] street urchins on the day of their First Communion...
