...itch to tell all had spread among retired White House hands. In the Saturday Evening Post, gurgling, roly-poly George E. Allen turned up last week with a one-shot article on "My Two Years with Truman." By Allen's account the two years had been fun for Allen but not so much fun for his good friend Harry Truman-a man of "exaggerated modesty" who had inherited all the problems of the Roosevelt Administration...

...word of his lesser newspapers, but when Pravda or Tass (the news agency) speaks, he feels that he is listening to the voice of his Government and is inclined to believe. There are exceptions, of course. I once asked a Russian acquaintance what he thought about a Tass account of a U.S. Negro youth congress which condemned lynchings and the activities of certain U.S. Senators. He replied: 'Do you think we're all idiots? Don't you think some of us will wonder why the Negroes, if they're so badly treated, are allowed to hold...

...Banned, Not Played. He made one speech, to the International Congress of Composers, but anyone who expected to hear new theories or techniques was disappointed. Blinking myopically under the klieg lights, he read a dull account of the bureaucratic organization of Soviet music, not once mentioning himself. At the end, someone asked: "Is your opera Lady Macbeth of Mzensk banned in Russia?" Said Shostakovich quietly: "It is not banned-it is simply not played." There was an embarrassed silence; considering the blast directed at Lady Macbeth by Soviet ideologists eleven years ago ("Screaming, neurotic music"), it was hardly a nice...
