Privy to all of Humphrey's top-level sessions and ultimate decisions, Berman, besides giving back rubs and advice, is keeping what he calls a "constant diary" of the campaign. Taking notes or, on occasion, using a tape recorder, he keeps an account of each meeting, then, as soon as he can, writes out what went on. With six weeks yet to go, his chronology already runs to 2,000 pages. If Humphrey should defy the odds and win the election, Berman would undoubtedly become Humphrey's Boswell, a physician-biographer with unparalleled access to the heart, mind...
Solzhenitsyn's account of the fate of prisoners' wives is the most sorrowing part of The First Circle. His cool realism is suffused with a rush of personal grief as he describes Gleb Ner-zhin's Nadya: waiting outside prisons for a glimpse of her husband, allowed rare letters and rarer visits, herself persecuted whenever her relationship to a prisoner is discovered?and, finally, driven to divorce in self-defense. (Solzhenitsyn's own wife, Natalya, divorced him at his urging while he was in prison. She remarried and bore two children, but after his release she divorced her second husband...
...recent issue reported the revolt of black athletes at the University of Texas' El Paso branch; another took up the cudgels for a long-neglected tribe of Indians. As usual, both stories had been largely ignored by the daily Texas press. So was the Observer's inside account of the editorial revolt and shake-up at the Austin American-Statesman, where pinchpenny management refused to replate for another edition on the night of Robert Kennedy's death...
More recently, the embarrassment has been compounded by another revelation about the his-her theses-an account of the U.S. Marines' 1915-34 occupation of Haiti. The military-affairs writer for the Detroit News, Robert D. Heinl Jr., a retired Marine colonel, says that the theses also bear strange similarities to an official 1934 Marine Corps report and a 1939 Marine history of the American intervention. In 1955, when the Naval Institute published McCrocklin's dissertation as a book, it listed him as "compiler" rather than author. In Who's Who in America, however, McCrocklin credited himself...
Conglomerate Miner. In 1959, the firm added "Mining" to its name in order to reflect newer operations that now account for 65% of its revenues. "Mining is our upward thrust," says Littlefield. The thrust started when Utah decided to adapt its earth-moving skills to open-pit mining projects. It has since become, in effect, a conglomerate miner...
