From acetylene is made Du Pont's neoprene (known in an earlier, smellier form as DuPrene). Acetylene gas is made into monovinylacetylene, which reacts with hydrochloric acid to form a liquid called chloroprene. Heat and pressure polymerize this substance into a tough, elastic product which looks much like crude natural rubber, but far surpasses it in resistance to age, heat, sunlight and gases. Thus neoprene is an excellent material for coating the 1,000,000 square yards of cotton in every U.S. barrage balloon. With remarkable foresight the U.S. Army last spring placed orders or laid plans with every...

...only free the U.S. from dependence on imported ores but will provide alumina cheaper than present methods of extracting it from high-grade bauxite ores. The process takes advantage of the fact that part of the aluminum silicate of which clay is largely composed is aluminum oxide. Boiling hydrochloric acid, Hixson found, combines with the oxide to form aluminum chloride dissolved in water (though it does not affect the silica). Impurities such as iron chloride (formed at the same time) are then removed with an ether. The remaining aluminum' chloride solution is then heated, aluminum is precipitated as hydrated...

...extraction of magnesium from water, others have been studying how to extract magnesium from rock. TVA scientists are working on the Carolinas' abundant magnesium silicate called olivine, of which 27% is recoverable magnesium (in contrast to sea water's .1%). When this ore is mixed with hydrochloric acid, magnesium chloride is formed which can be treated by electrolysis just like that from water. Because olivine is so rich in metal and TVA power sells cheaply, experiments have been launched at Georgia Tech in the hope of making this a major U.S. source of cheap magnesium...

...Army or disaster to the show. It is a lively job, leaping nimbly from gag to gag, light on its feet, pleasant to the eye. Cole Porter's score, though never haunting, is often hummable. In a generally competent cast, Comedienne Eve Arden stands out for her deft, acid touch, Mary Jane Walsh for her singing personality...
